Raising Awareness on Measles

Measles remains one of the most contagious viral diseases worldwide, posing significant health risks, especially to young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Despite being preventable through vaccination, measles continues to cause serious illness and even death globally. Raising awareness about its symptoms, transmission, and prevention is essential to protect ourselves and those around us.

What Is Measles?

Measles is caused by the morbillivirus, an enveloped virus spread primarily through coughing, sneezing, close personal contact, or direct contact with infected nasal or throat secretions. The virus is highly contagious — spending just 15 minutes or more in direct contact with an infected person can be enough to transmit the infection.

After an incubation period averaging 10 to 12 days, symptoms typically begin with a high fever, runny nose, red and watery eyes, cough, and distinctive Koplik spots (small red spots with bluish-white centers inside the mouth). A characteristic rash usually appears several days later, starting on the face and upper neck, spreading down the hands and feet, and lasting up to six days before fading.

Why We Should Be Concerned

Measles remains a serious global health threat. In 2023, it tragically claimed the lives of over 107,500 people worldwide. Complications can be severe and include ear infections, pneumonia, diarrhoea, dehydration, fits, miscarriage in pregnant women, and serious illness, especially in vulnerable groups such as young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Alarmingly, one in fifteen people who contract measles can become seriously ill.

Prevention and Control

Prevention starts with vaccination. The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is safe, effective, and the best defense against this virus. We encourage everyone to ensure they and their families are fully vaccinated.

In healthcare and community settings, suspected cases must be isolated quickly and managed appropriately, such as fast-tracking through emergency departments to reduce the risk of further transmission.

Regular hand sanitising, wearing protective face masks, and rigorous cleaning and disinfecting practices are essential. Products like Medipal Disinfectant Wipes and Medipal Chlorine Wipes have been tested against the measles virus and can play a vital role in infection control.
